Languages at The Minster

At the Minster Juniors, one modern and one ancient language is taught to each child. We believe that the learning of a language provides a valuable educational, enjoyable and cultural experience for all pupils, including those with special educational needs.

Lessons enable pupils to make substantial progress in both languages. The ‘transferrable’ language learning skills gained will support and lay foundations for further language study. Learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures more as well as those of others.

Latin

We teach latin, our classic language in Years 4-6, which follows a programme of study called, ‘Maximum Classics’ supported by the organisation, ‘Classics for All’. The programme introduces children to the Roman civilisation and teaches them the language, myths and cultural legacy of the past. The course supports and enhances children’s understanding of English spelling, punctuation and grammar through the study of Latin. It also supports children’s oracy, language and vocabulary skills, as well as their etymological and cultural knowledge.

Languages Curriculum Overview

Spanish

We are also members of the Primary Language Network and follow their robust and ambitious scheme of work to deliver language provision. The scheme is continually updated and revised in order to meet with current curriculum standards. Alongside the planning provided, the scheme is supported by accompanying videos, PowerPoints, audio files (spoken by native speakers) links to authentic literature, songs, games, cultural points of reference, seasonal specials and cross-curricular links, all with a ‘primary’ focus. Year 4 work through Stage 1 of language learning. Years 5 and 6 work through Stages 2 and 3 respectively.
